We are at the end of the decade, so I collect some ideas and impressions on the discs that I consider fundamental and inalienable, among those released in the year 2000. Still much to deepen and
I know, this is a snapshot of what the end of 2009, passing from my stereo, so far has reached my brain and my heart, and left deep scars.
(the order of presentation of the discs is ... is not an alphabetical list)
Red Sparowes - At the Soundless Dawn. beautiful record of classic post-rock, with an atmosphere closer to the spirituality of Isis that the sweet melancholy of Mogwai. An instrumental record of rare beauty that moves and, while not inventing anything, it sounds personal and fascinating.
Sunn O))) - Black One. If the Earth were made given their more melodic, the Sunn O))) extremes increasingly atmospheres. The walls remain intact and sound high, but on them slips a black liquid called black metal. How to turn the music lesson of the devil, canceling the pace for an annihilating sense really scary. Impressive and monolithic, undoubtedly one of the quotes of the band.
Ulver - Blood Inside. The Ulver change the cards on the table yet. Garm's voice again the protagonist, and twists between the dark atmosphere of this album, which sounds crazy and staring in his black humor
Khanate - Capture & Release. Two tracks for a long exhausting walk to Hell. The formula remains the same, abrasive music and acid by slowly, and alienating. Dissonant drones and hypnotic in its resonances, torn from inhuman screams. Pain
Dredg - Catch Without Arms. More pop of the previous album, the new birth is a beautiful work of Dredg solar winds with its heat. Superfine usual arrangements for a rock that does not go unnoticed thanks to the incredible effectiveness of the melodies. An immediate and hard for this seemingly trivial, but the feelings are very intense leaving, all you need sensitivity to dig beneath the brilliant guitars of this work.
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing. developing more and more metal side already on In Absentia, the band consists of Wilson's work closer to the twilight atmosphere of Opeth. But the band does not lose his personality, and retains a strong melodic and slightly psychedelic. Apart from a couple of less interesting episodes, the disc is convincing and exciting.
Oceansize - evryone into Position. Second hard for this band from Manchester who waved builds a psychedelic sound, halfway between the melancholy of A Perfect Circle and that of Porcupine Tree, with the touch of the sensitivity of Radiohead and Mogwai. Characterized by a noisy rock sounds brilliant and very special arrangements in which the guitars intertwine perfectly.
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute. Without inhibitions The Mars Volta river in their vomit full of notes, which are intertwined, overlapping, endlessly chasing each other in a crazy kaleidoscope. One disc for excessive and somewhat redundant, but perhaps because of it full of energy and overflowing overwhelming, unstoppable. A good dose of melody throughout the seasons, to create an extraordinary example of rock progress of the new millennium.
Opeth - Ghost Reveries. The come from Opeth Damnation great success but also fierce criticism from fans of historical starting to consider them now in the way of "selling art." The band continued on their way and made a beautiful record, original and modern, yet deeply rooted in the past the band. One perceives a greater taste for melody, and above all a profound influence on that passion that has always seventies prog Akerfeldt and company. To amplify this need, the group comes into permanent keyboardist Per Wiberg embroidering bilanciatissime never intrusive and slightly psychedelic flavor notes.
Earth - Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method. reinvent itself and become once more original, creative and expressive. Leaving the noisy drone the Earth they walk in the way of melody, with development of post rock matrix, but with a feeling much closer to the hypnotic and psychedelic blues. Sounds hot loads and resonate forever in a beautiful instrumental record that brings to mind wide-open spaces, in the American desert. A personal vision of Dead Man by Neil Young, obviously on acid.
Harvestman - Lashing the Rye. Instrumental, hypnotic, psychedelic. An album where the guitar and synthesizers create dreamlike, now desert and very hot, now liquid and frozen. Soundtrack of a H2Odio movies thriller which, although interesting, fails to represent visually the atmosphere created by a hard spiritual and subtly mysterious.
Ufomammut - Lucifer Songs. The disc in my opinion, more personal and interesting of the many good works of the band of Tortona. A doom lysergic highly seasoned with steps such as hot lava. Hypnotic, heavy and disturbing but also overwhelming. Not only Neurosis and Electric Wizard, here you hear the distinct personality of the Italian band, by far the most interesting of the decade.
Shora - Malval. A ep where lives the best and the best post rock math rock. Although it is not anything particularly innovative, is a synthesis extraordinarily compelling. Unjustly forgotten.
Behold ... the Arctopus - Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning. Three instrumental pieces that owe much to the hyper-technical death metal of the 90s. Crazy plots and evolving, that they never miss a moment of melodic grooves and effectiveness (as opposed to the next full length). There is also space for reflection in some ways really psychedelic dream. Extraordinary
35007 - Phase V With the Phase V Dutch band confirms the path taken with Liquid and amplifies the suggestions dream, through the more relaxed atmosphere and less cathartic than in the past, but still remarkably effective. Projected into space and lose the connection with your body.
Sigur Ros - Takk ... Yet another evolution for this extraordinary band, that on this occasion reduces the expansion, leaving the muffled world and dream of the previous disc, and creates sketches from the nostalgic flavor, like old fairy tales for children. Sweet, fresh like summer Icelandic no longer covered by a huge layer of snow, but rather nice lit by the rays of the Sun Yet another masterpiece.
Coil - The Ape of Naples. electronic music fascinating and mysterious, that sees the light a few months after the death of singer John Balance. A hard hypnotic, subtle and classy, \u200b\u200bwhich needs time to settle in the souls of those who, like me, is almost like fasting. But the depth of this music is really indisputable. Fundamental, inter alia, to the musical growth of another great band, Ulver.
Amplifier - The Astronaut Dismantles HAL.
Hard psychedelic rock very modern which takes its cue from large groups of the 90's and early 2000. Very convincing thanks to the excellent spatial arrangements that make the songs really impressive. This ep is more interesting anyway good debut album, which at times was too derivative and not always interesting for the duration.
Pelican - The Fire in Our Throats Will beckon the Thaw. The post-rock instrumental weights but does not lose its great capacity melodic. From the beginning, the Pelican noisy doom you are slowly evolved into the melody, reaching a perfect balance with this record.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor. yet another confirmation for the band to Seattle. A classic album, less acid and diverted the previous ones, with a very high dose of melody but never cloying. Yet another masterpiece of intelligent thrash metal, perhaps less surprising than some predecessors, but azzecatissimo in every note.
Low Toner - Toner Low. son of the best psychedelic stoner doom Electric Wizard and Sleep. Fat distortion, powerful energy, a lot of psychedelia, this is really a gem that deserves more attention.
Martin Grech - Unholy. This young musician reaches adulthood with her second disc, which, though not without defects, proves to be a fresh mix of the poetry of Jeff Buckley and the darkness of Tool, with an eye to the electronic experiments of Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead.
